Wix is one of the most popular website builders today, and it’s not a surprise when you see the impressive site building capabilities and the beautiful templates that you can choose from. The company was founded in 2006, so they’ve been around for a while, starting out with flash templates and moving on to the more efficient and adaptable HTML5.
Visit Wix
Wix offers a lot of templates to choose from and they are all very impressive. With the different styles, layouts, and colors available, finding a template that fits your brand is pretty easy. The site builder gives you full control over every aspect of your website. Everything is “drag-and-drop”, and you can click any item to edit everything about it from the colors and style to the settings. All of the templates on Wix are mobile-friendly, but they are not responsive, which means you have to edit your mobile site separately. You can’t change your template once you’ve started editing your website so choose wisely.

Pros & Cons

Beautiful templates – Wix templates set the standard, with a host of options for almost every type of industry or use-case. Mobile Site must be edited separately – For ease of setup we prefer automatically optimized templates. Wix gives you more flexibility to differentiate your mobile site’s appearance, but at the cost of convenience.
Unlimited design flexibility – Templates are endlessly customizable, so there’s no danger your site will end up looking like a million others! Template can’t be switched – Spent days working on your site only to be struck by new inspiration? Well, you’ll have to start from the beginning, as there’s no way to automatically switch your site to a different template.
App Market – The Wix App Market is a game-changer. It gives you the power to add almost any type of site functionality you can imagine.
Ideal for – Wix is especially suitable for designers who don’t have a technical background. This is because no technical experience is required, and the design capabilities are unlimited. The downside to this is that someone without any design skills may find it hard to customize their website due to too much flexibility.

Ease of Use

The Wix site builder is extremely intuitive and easy to use and even includes the standard “CTRL+Z” to undo recent actions. With Wix you simply click an item and drag it anywhere on the screen. You can also double-click items to edit them or hover over them to see menu buttons that you can click for customization options.

Each website is divided into different sections. The header and footer can be seen on all pages, and anything you drag there will also be visible on every page. You can drag the footer or header border line in order to make them smaller or bigger. If you move something outside of the content area, you’ll be notified, so don’t worry about that.

Because of the complete control when dragging items, it may be hard to align items exactly in the middle or next to each other. Make sure to pay attention to the gridlines that appear when an item you’re dragging is aligned with something.

The flexibility that Wix allows over individual design elements is great but it does make it more suitable for people with at least some designing skills.
If you don’t have a web design background at all and you still want to benefit from all of the Wix features and designs, it is best to choose a template that will require minimum changes to avoid making any irreversible mistakes on your site.

Plans & Pricing

Wix’s extremely useful freemium business model allows you to get to grips with the platform’s functionality before upgrading to a paid subscription.
The Free Plan gets you access to the complete platform with all the templates. You can launch a site without spending a cent, but you’ll be restricted to a subdomain, and you won’t be able to remove the Wix ads from your site. Bandwidth and storage is also limited but overall, there’s no better way to discover if Wix is the website builder for you.
Paid plans start at $4.08 per month and range up to $24.92 per month. The lowest priced package, Connect Domain, offers similar features to the free plan but gives you the freedom to use your own domain name. The Combo Plan, starting at $8.25/month, comes with a free domain name of your choice, no Wix ads, and more bandwidth and storage.
The Unlimited, eCommerce and VIP plans are priced at $12.42, $16.17 and $24.92 per month, and each adds extra functionality, bandwidth and storage. You’ll need to opt for one of the two most expensive plans if you plan on opening an eCommerce site.

Features

Mobile Optimization All of the Wix templates are optimized for mobile, but they are not responsive. This means that after you’ve finished working on your website, you will have to work on your mobile site separately to make sure that everything looks good.
It is very easy to do, but does require additional time and effort which could have been avoided if the templates were 100% responsive.
To edit your mobile site, you simply switch to the mobile editor and you’ll be able to see what your website looks like on a mobile phone.
You can edit the mobile site with the same flexibility and control as the regular site builder, and choose different items you’d like to show or hide when your site is viewed on a smartphone.

Seo Tools & Marketing: Search engine optimization is important, and Wix has quite a lot of SEO features. Basic SEO features are available in the SEO Wizard in the website settings. In addition, you have the App Market. Because Wix has a market where you can search for and add apps, you can add many SEO and marketing apps that will help you promote your website in search engines and market it to your target audience.
Some apps are available for free while others have premium features that require a one-time fee or subscription.
Social Media Tools: There are built-in social media tools in the Wix site builder, including a social media bar, feeds, and like and share buttons. If you want more complex or different features, you can visit the App Market where you can browse dozens of social media apps that you could use.
eCommerce: Setting up a store on Wix is pretty fast. You simply click Add and then Store.
In order for it to work, you need to upgrade to the eCommerce package. Once you do, you’ll be able to easily add and edit products, edit how the store looks visually, and the different payment options.
Stores on Wix look very modern and are similar to most popular fashion sites today so all you have to do is add your products and configure the store settings in order to have a great-looking shop.
1_25
Apps and Plug-ins: Wix has an App Market where you can browse loads of different apps by partner companies and even Wix. You can browse apps by category or search for a specific app or feature that you want.
Some apps are free, while others have additional premium features that require a fee. Many of the available apps are quite useful, like the MailChimp app for collecting subscribers, or the Facebook Like Popup that engages your visitors with a popup and asks them to like you on Facebook.

Design and Templates

Wix has quite a lot of templates to choose from and they are all divided into many different categories, which is a good thing because browsing all of them would take a few hours.
You can browse the most popular or new templates, or you can choose a category from the list:

  • Business
  • Online Store
  • Photography
  • Music
  • Design
  • Restaurants & food
  • Accommodation
  • Events
  • Portfolio & CV
  • Blog
  • Health & Wellness
  • Fashion & Beauty
  • Community & Education
  • Creative Arts
  • Landing Pages

Editing the templates is easy and you get complete control over the template you choose. This means moving around items using the drag-and-drop feature, changing colors, fonts, backgrounds and images. The level of design flexibility means that you can actually take a blank template and design the website however you want. The templates are a great way to discover designs if you’re not sure what you need, and as a shortcut to the long design process.
You can’t easily change your template once you’ve started building your site, so choose wisely or you will have to build your entire site from scratch to change designs. This can be very frustrating if you want to change your template after working on your website for weeks, but at the moment it doesn’t look like that’s going to change on Wix.

Support and Tutorials

Wix provides its users with pretty comprehensive support. If you visit the Knowledge Center, you can browse and search discussion boards and tutorials to find the answers you’re looking for. If you need help just understanding the site builder and how to use its different features, check out their Training Videos. You can also look through their FAQs or open a ticket in the Help Center if you still need assistance.

There is no option to contact them directly via chat, phone, or email, but if you open a ticket, you’ll get a response from someone at Wix fairly quickly (a few hours) and they are very helpful and eager to solve your problem.

The Final Word

Overall, Wix is an excellent site builder and its popularity is well-earned. For designers, it is like building a website in Photoshop, with complete control over every aspect of the site without having to code or use complicated technical features. For those who aren’t designers or don’t have a background in design, this may be a bit too much, and a simpler and more limited site builder might be preferred. The features available are extensive and the App Market makes it easy to find creative features like popups and forms that you can add to create a really professional-looking and functional site.

Hi Eric. I just signed up with SFI and wanna set up my Trippleclics domain/website. Wix was one of the suggestions to use. I am new to all of all of this, but this web builder seems pretty easy to use. I also want to know when the “free” part ends and when charging starts.

      Hi Tony,
Unfortunately you cannot transfer your website pages to Wix to edit. You can transfer the domain name, then choose one of Wix’s templates, which make it easy to get your site up and running quickly.

You are able to purchase a domain directly from Wix, and host your website on the Wix servers. You can also transfer a previously purchased domain to your new Wix website.

    Reply

      Hi Lina,
Thanks for your question. Wix is a very secure website builder service. Only you can make changes to your website – or anyone else you decide to share your account information with. Wix is committed to its users security, and if you’d like more information you can check out Wix’s help center page about security.

Hi Eric, I have used WIX before for a non profit and loved it. My wife and I are opening a spa and I think WIX would be perfect for what we need. However, we will also be purchasing scheduling software (possibly from square) — can we add a scheduling icon to WIX that will direct users to be able to self schedule their appointments?

Hello, I currently use Web.com..but the templates are dated. I love WIX templates they look more professional for my wedding planning, decorating and rentals. Im not good on computers but from playing around on your site it seems easy. The only thing stopping me so far is I can’t find a way to show my inventory under subtitles. My items cannot be purchased or reserved on line. Its just visual with pricing and description so the brides know what we have. Is this an option? If so how do I add these pictures under 4-5 captions…example – linens – Event Decor – Tableware

I’m a Weebly user and have been happy with it although it seems that Wix may be a better and less expensive option. Should I be able to set up a Wix site then when ready transfer my domain from Weebly to Wix?

    Reply
    • Eric

      Hi Cathie,

We think both Wix and Weebly are excellent site builders. You can’t really go wrong with either. It all comes down to which interface you prefer to use. They’re also pretty close on price, and which is cheaper can depend on exactly which package you need.

It is possible to transfer your domain from Weebly to Wix, although there are one or two restrictions. Before you spend too long on rebuilding your site with Wix I’d recommend you speak to customer support to check that there won’t be any issues when it’s time to make the switch.

      Good luck with your site!

Hello I have a blog/page on wordpress.com (free version) based on my past experience along with poerty and some advice. I would like to reach a wider audience and maybe make some income from my website with AdSense or just ads period if possible. I have been writing for years, yet I feel as if I am just starting out by not having my own website. I am not trying to start a online business and I may not be well known, but having my own website would be great. I have good things about wix.com (and not so good things) and I am really excited about wix.com, yet I am unsure about what to do. Any suggestions?

      Hi Mike,

It’s great to hear that you’re ready to launch your own website. You’re right, as a writer there’s really no excuse anymore not to have a presence online. Luckily, website builders have made it easier than ever for anyone to create something really professional.
Wix is a great website builder. It’s slick, powerful and easy to use.

Since you have some experience using WordPress.com, you might also consider BoldGrid as an option. It’s a drag-and-drop website builder that uses the WordPress CMS as a basis. That means you get the ease of something like Wix with the power of WordPress, including compatibility with all WordPress themes and plug-ins. You’ll also have no difficulties with ad network-compatibility.

You can get started with BoldGrid here.

      Good luck!

WIX has a nice builder. But you can’t monetize their websites – can’t install AdSense or Info links. Also, their “mailbox” is nothing more than a free gmail account which they charge $25 for! Not very ethical IMO. And they don’t tell you any of this up front.

    Reply
    • Eric Renfro

      Hi Alan,
Wix does support AdSense, they’ve just temporarily removed it from their app store. It should return soon.
Most website builders use a Gmail-based mailbox. Even if you go to Gmail directly for a business email account featuring your business domain, it costs money.
Wix is one of the most feature-rich website builders around, so we’d recommend speaking to their excellent customer support team directly for answers to all of your questions.

I am wondering if Wix will soon be able to offer a “responsive web site” platform capability? I have a site on Wix but discovered that it is not compatible with all mobile devices, Kindle fire, or many different monitor screen sizes. There are so many different ways people connect to the internet today that I think it is very important that ones web site be optimized so it is available to everyone…not just a few. Any thoughts on that?

      Hi Michael,
Once you upload your pictures, they are stored in your website builder’s image library.
Once your add an image to your website, you can drag it anywhere you want on the page, however, it cannot be dragged to the desktop.
In case you want to save it on your desktop, right click on your mouse and choose “save image as” option.

Wix has their own turn-key solution for eCommerce. They have just uploaded a new version for online store builder.
You get everything you need for your online shop with a eCommerce package and there are no any additional expenses.
As for Shopify, Wix offer their apps in Wix app store. If you want to use any of Shopify’s apps you will have to pay for it.
Both are nice solutions for building an online store but if you like Wix templates you should definitely go with their solution for ecommerce.

It’s really comfortable and their support is excellent!

    not really good for SEO

Their templates are great but it is very difficult to promote your website in organic search with Wix

    best builder for a newbie

Great templates, very easy to use editor. I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a professional design and have no technical experience.
